Doll Events Abound This past couple of weeks alone, there was  a Pullip Convention, two Theriault's Rendezvous auctions with another this Monday, many art fairs, and new dolls like Disney Descendant's, more Halloween and Fall dolls, including Annalee at Marshall's, Holiday Barbies 2015, and new promotions from Madame Alexander, Tonner, and American Girl. Pope Francis Holds Services before a 400 year old Santo

The Pope held mass before a 400 year old Santo representing The Madonna while he was in Cuba.  I usually write about these during the holidays, but this photo bears sharing and repeating.

Santos are religious figures meant to be displayed in churches, some with elaborate, hand sewn garments.   Laura Starr writes of them extensively in "The Doll Book" (1908), available free on Kindle and Google books, but can be found on ebay, too.  Mary Hillier, Max von Boehn, and Janet Pagter Johl also write about them.  This example is one of the oldest, and I'm guessing if she is 400 years old, then she came with the Spaniards to Cuba during the conquest.

"Maria" and "The Museum of Mary Child" are books for kids and teens based on Santos, and Rumer Godden's "The Kitchen Madonna" is also about them.  In the Eastern Orthodox Church, we do not have religious statues as The Catholic church does.  We have 2 dimensional icons that take their places, with only a large figure of  Jesus on the Cross that is removed at Easter and replaced after 40 days.  For many years, The Greek Orthodox Church frowned upon dolls representing priests and Orthodox nuns, but that changed about 25 years ago, and I began to find examples of them, and of a Russian Orthodox nun as well.

Santos are related to Creche or Nativity figures, or the figures made for the Precipio or German Putz.

This lovely lady knew Mary Hillier, my friend, and had visited her home in England.  Over the years, I shared books with D.A., and a love of Queen Victoria and her dolls.  Many of D.A's bears, dolls, and golliwogs have joined my collection, where they will be treasured forever.  Rest in peace, dear lady.

Remember 9/11; On this Date, they are Our Families, Too, to Mourn

Today is the 14th Anniversary of 9/11.  That year brought a lot of police and firefighter dolls home for Christmas. To top it off, we have the 3 year Anniversary of Benghazi.  Sometimes, the world is a mad, sad place.  Each year, I try to remember 9/11 in my blogs, and ask my readers to as well. I also remember everyone else who has died for his/her country, and the victims of massacre, horror, and holocaust everywhere.  I remember my friends and colleagues in TSA and Homeland Security, who stay in touch and come as guest speakers to my kids who study law and criminal justice, and I say a silent prayer for their safety, on 9/11 and everyday.  In times like these, regardless of what everyone else might say about us and our imperfections, I remember in my heart that we still are the land of  the free, and the home of the brave, and that while for one nanosecond we were driven out of the sky and to our knees, no one died in vain because the Government by the people, for the people, did NOT perish from the earth.  God Bless all of us, and though I wasn't born here, God Bless the United States, my home.  Be safe today.

The Force, Labor Day and Descendants

Happy Labor Day to everyone!  This was an eventful week for doll collectors, only one in September, Doll Collecting Month.

This is also the day Princess Diana was buried in 1997.  Here is my Peggy Nisbet doll in her honor, and you may want to read my post on dollcollecting.about.com, Remembering Princess Diana with Dolls.

Star Wars; The Force Awakens toys hit the shelves, with national news coverage of people waiting in long lines.  Toys R Us and Target have good selections, and there are several online options as well.  I found action figures at about $7.99-9.99 with plus and talking plush at about $10.  There are the large, 39 inch figures of the new characters, and some classics like the large talking, plush Chewbacca.  He is soft, cuddly, and adorable, and $99.99!  I heard the Target staff lamenting the high prices and expressing surprise that most of the consumers for these products were middle aged men.  Well, they were just kids when the first movie came out in 1976.  There are many options, even notebooks, books, and a nice line of clothing for all ages at Target.   I came home with a small femal action figure, but I will be back for some of the larger dolls, figures, and plush.

The Descendants by Disney also hit the shelves this month and during August, following the July 2015 debut of the Disney Channel movie.  The 11 inch dolls represent the children of Disney Villains and other characters like Mulan.  They are elaborate and detailed, as well as popular.  Read more about them on my site on About.com Doll Collecting, collectdolls.about.com.

Spirit of Halloween has many dolls, especially the mechanical antique dolls and various Zombie babies.  There are also special deals online. The new antique doll is Roaming Rosie.  I pre-ordered her, and will blog more on her when she arrives.   Doll costumes like Monster High have their own section, and little girls can do their own Draculaura make-up.

I've also spotted more dolls on vintage TV. An early 60s  Andy Griffith Show with Elinor Donohue as Ellie the druggest featured plush like Quick Draw McGraw, and hard plastic Nancy Ann Storybookdolls in their boxes.   Gorgeous figurines, maybe Royal Doulton, were props in a Colombo movie with Peter Falk.  The Danny Thomas Show had 7.5 inch Dress Me Dolls as props in his preteen daughter's room, and Gilligan's Island featured Mr. Howell's Teddy.

Dolls really are where you find them.  You just have to look.
