Autumn; Public Domain and My Photos for you to Enjoy!

This is the time of year when anything can happen, when the air is magic.  It is finally crisp and cool, and Halloween is just one week away, and Christmas two months off! My memories of this time of year are the best.  My mother and I decorated our window, and I made many of the decorations. She made most of my costumes, including a fantastic Raggedy Ann like no other I've seen, and a witch with cats appliqued on her dress.  One outfit came form Spain, a rare exception to our homemade tradition, and one was Laura Ingalls.  Dad took a whole group of us trick or treating; once in a while there was a party, too.  My Aunt Rose went out of her way to do little seasonal tea parties; and she excelled at Halloween, even to a great clown outfit she had.  I loved the parade at school, and the Sunday School parties.  I hope your memories are as good.  Take out your Gurley candles, your witches, scarecrows, and corn dollies.  Explore making dolls with gourds and cornhusks, and above all, enjoy!

March of the Japanese Friendship Dolls; Guest Blogger Caroline Johnson

It was pure serendipity that my friend Caroline, collector of beautiful ethnic dolls and world traveler, sent me the story below about a friendship doll.  I have visited the doll on display in The Milwaukee Public Museum, and we used to have one at former Audubon Elementary School.  There was more than one doll there; besides the traditional doll, there were smaller, vinyl baby dolls with black wigs made during the early 80s, and some other children's artifacts.  My son's former 5th grade teacher took the dolls home with her when the school closed.


A friendship doll was on display around 20 years ago at our local children's museum.  Now, another doll, Miss Hokkaido, is being restored at the Putnam Museum, Davenport, Iowa.  She is Iowa's Japanese Friendship Doll, and is also called Miss Hanako Hokai  Masaru Aoki, who is affiliated with the Yashitoku Doll Company, Tokyo, has been in the area to restore the 32" doll.  In 1927, the US sent over 12,000 dolls to Japanese children, and 58 Friendship Dolls were sent in return, according to the Quad-City Times. Festival, usually celebrated March 3d.  Miss Hokkaido has her own passport, date October 1927. I try to go to the MN Doll Jamboree every year, as a Doll collector it’s my highlight to go. The Jamboree selects a cause to contribute to each year. Last year it was to help to restore Miss Miyazaki, which is a Friendship Doll from Japan.
Here’s the story:
After WWI a retired missionary to Japan came home to California & was appalled to fine immense discrimination against Japan. Many Japanese had immigrated to California & we’re taking up jobs & buying property. The missionary was saddened to think how American children were being taught about Japanese people, so he had children here send toy dolls to children there. Japan was so touched that they had Japanese Doll artists make 55 dolls  made as a gift of friendship to show their culture. These dolls were 3’ tall. There were parades all around the US featuring these dolls. One was given to each state. Then WWII happened. The dolls took backstage some were donated , some were even thrown out. 33 of these dolls have been found, some in great disrepair. Minnesota’s Miss Miyazaki was found in the basement of the Hibbing library. She has been restored & is making her debut at the history center. Thought you may like to know😜

Tidbits fromt he 21st Century of Dolls

Time has a new publication out on Artificial Intelligence; the next wave of the automatons we all know and love.


I used to write about Snowman dolls and snowmen in general as effigy figures for about.com.  I did a great photo gallery at hat I will have to recreate; I don't think it is up any more.  In any case, a new thriller is out called "The Snowman", about a serial killer that disguises himself as yes, Frosty.


"Man Bun Ken" seems to have disappeared from store shelves, but I did find him on Amazon.com.


Have had fantastic luck with dolls, lately.  On our fall scenic drive, I found a Bam Bam, Mrs. Littlechap in her box, Mattel's Gorgeous Creatures, Vintage Ken with two tagged Barbie dresses, both vintage.  Today I hit a sale with hundreds of dolls, including composition, Alexanders galore.  I came home with the Madame, Elise, Pink Renoir, a compo Patsy, Princess Elizabeth, several good compo dolls, all about $2-4 dollars, Chatty Cathy for $1.50.  These were --in their original boxes, for the most part.  Another was a fantastic vintage Furga doll, also in her box, around $5.  Why have these dolls gone down in value--I don't have a real answer.  I paid $10 for a Dionne Toddler still carrying it's $350 price tag.  The Royal Copenhagen china head, long a desired doll, came home with me for only $20.  A Lenci Anili came home for less than that, and a gorgeous Shirley with perfect eyes was only $50.  It's a buyer's market; collect away.

Rohmer anda Vintage Sister, from Old Eclecitics and Gigi's and Sherry's

Top center is my vintage French china head from Old Eclectics.  She has a gorgeous red
velvet dress.  In front, is a small doll with provenance.  His previous owners told Gigi's and Sherry's that
he was made by slaves.  We treasure him at The Museum.  If you get a chance to see the traveling exhibit of
Deborah Neff's collection of Black dolls, don't miss it.  With it is a selection of photographs of little girls
playing with antique dolls and antique Black dolls.  She has also written a wonderful book, available on Amazon.com.  See, also, my photos which appear on Google maps. Don't' ask me how they got there.



29 inch Pink Luster or Pink Tinted Rohmer, Gigi's and Sherry's  I'm honored that she as once in Gigi's collection.
She is holding a vintage, silk screen Indian doll, also from these lovely ladies.  Rohmer-type doll is all original, with a Rembrandt wig, and lovely glass eyes.  I will take a better pic later. Huret and Rohmer are my favorites; I am lucky to have one antique of each, and several very good vintage dolls. As a student of law, I am interested in the lawsuit between them over the design of dolls' bodies.  Women were that powerful as entrepreneurs in 1855; we still remember their lawsuits today. Look long enough, and you can find what you want.  I never thought I would have antique French dolls, but now, I  do.  Don't sneer at handmade reproductions, either.  Building a wardrobe for them is a lot of fun!

Hitty's Halloween

This wonderful Hitty was a gift from my friend, the paper doll artist and doll author, Steph Hammonds.  Hitty often goes to work with me and celebrates holidays.  I also sketch her, with plans for a picture book.  Here she is at Halloween, visiting The House of Seven Gables, a favorite spot for me and Steph, and known for the dolls sold there.  They appear in the book as well, and I've included in my own "A Bibliography of Doll and Toy Sources."  I'm thrilled to have bought a Gables doll in Salem many years ago.
