What are the steps I can start making now? Are there classes I can take to get more experience? If you know anything about fashion design please tell me! and answer my q's, please. :)
ReplyDeleteHi, John. Thanks for the comment on my blog; you made my day! :) I'm not a designer, but I have a few suggestions anyway:
ReplyDeleteGoogle fashion design schools, or look at big universities like SIUC Carbondale, which has these majors. Get in contact with them.
Google and talk to people who are/were costume designers for theater and film. The folks at headlesshistoricals.com have theater as there major, and are on facebook.
Read about designers like Coco Chanel. Some of them, like Chretien la Croix, had parents who made doll clothes.
Read books on textile, costumes and clothes. One of the best is What People Wore, and it came out in 1971 or so.
Talk to people at Vogue, McCalls, Butterick patterns. They are online, and many of these companies ask for resumes or feature employment opportunities. I'm not a bonded, licensed, professional fashion designer by any means. I sew doll clothes and like to create paper dolls and collage, but I admire fashion. I always look for the September Vogue, and love W and Telva Magazine [Spain} Follow your hear, and your dream.
For Inspiration, try the new book, Steal like an Artist; 10 things Nobdy Told you about Being Creative by Austin Kleon.New York; Workman Publishing, www.workman.com. Available at Barnes/Noble.
Also, my book, A Bibliography of Doll and Toy Sources is on Amazon. I have sections on fashion and fashion dolls. Do you post pictures of your work anywhere? Good Luck, and thanks for the comment.
