RAGGEDY ANN DOLLS

Raggedy Ann is one of America's most beloved fictitious characters, created by Johnny Gruelle. He wrote a series of books for young children, an idea that started one night to entertain his daughter, Marcella. She brought him an old rag doll one night, faded and worn, that she had found in the attic. Over the years, so many variations of size, face, and clothing came on the market. We love all of them - from the commercial to the curious handmade. What is it about Raggedy Ann & Andy that is so attractive? Is it the inquisitive look, the "unbreakable" body that just invites one to hug her close? Maybe it's that all the stories featured a character that reflected kindness, perseverance, and moxie. Whatever it is that draws collectors in, Raggedy Ann's enduring charm will last for many more years to come. Here are some of our favorites on The Dolls Lane.

THE RUBY LANE BLOG - A LIFE-LONG LOVE OF DOLLS

The dolls make me do it. What, you may ask? It all started with my life-long love of dolls. Sometime between high school and married with children, dolls exited my life. Years later, seeing Coleman's Encyclopedia of Doll Clothes in a bookstore, I realized that adults could study and collect dolls. I visited that book often, wishing I could own it. How silly it seemed to want an expensive book about doll clothes, so I told no one. A decade later, I bought my first antique doll.
